Volunteering in India

Why should teens and high schools students volunteer?

What do you do during the school holidays? Sleep? See friends, go to the movies, hit the shops? Sure, it’s important to recharge, but have you ever thought of doing something more productive during the holidays?

Volunteering is a great way to help those in need and do something meaningful with your time that will not only boost your skills and life experience but also make you feel good about yourself. A Broader View offers teen volunteer opportunities overseas, so you can achieve all this while immersing yourself in the sights, sounds, and tastes of a new country and culture!

Volunteering abroad is a unique and important way to gain perspective and understand your place in the world. Dedicating your time to providing crucial services in poverty-stricken countries is a truly humbling experience, and an effective reminder of the privileged life you lead back home.

Furthermore, volunteer teen trips overseas are a great way to enhance your resume and make it stand out when applying for college, internships, and jobs. Learning new skills and implementing them in unfamiliar situations and environments is no mean feat, and employers are likely to see you as a brave, passionate go-getter who isn’t afraid to try new things!

Now that you have a better understanding of why you might like to volunteer, it’s time to start thinking about which country you’d like to volunteer in!

We offer 245 programs across 25 countries, so whether you want to teach English in Peru, work with injured wildlife in India or organize mission trips for teens, there will be a program for you! Here’s a sneak peek of what’s on offer:

Volunteer in Central America

Volunteer Belize – Come and volunteer at our lively orphanage in a country famous for its rainforest and reefs. Enhance your knowledge of childcare, brighten the lives of disadvantaged children and maybe even learn some Spanish in beautiful Belize.

Volunteer Costa Rica – Celebrated for its incredible biodiversity, this tropical jungle, and coastal paradise is one of the best places in the world to volunteer with sloths and sea turtles. Apply to one of our popular wildlife programs or opt to volunteer in our wonderful orphanage instead.

Volunteer in South America

Volunteer Peru – Home to an ancient Incan city and a sliver of the Amazon rainforest, Peru is a fantastic base for teen volunteer opportunities. Our programs are based in Cusco, where you can volunteer in our elderly care and day care centers, work alongside disadvantaged children in our orphanage or teach English at one of the local schools.

Volunteer Ecuador – An equatorial country home to Andean highlands, Amazonian jungle, and the spectacular Galápagos Islands, our volunteer programs are as unique as Ecuador’s diverse landscape. From hippotherapy in Quito to conservation work on a remote volcanic archipelago, there’s plenty to choose from.

Volunteer in Asia

Volunteer Nepal – See the towering mountains and ancient temples for yourself in Kathmandu, where you could find yourself teaching English to monks, volunteering in a local dental clinic or empowering women through training and education.

Volunteer India – Variety is the spice of life, which rings true for India and the diverse range of volunteer work we offer in Jaipur. Contribute to elephant conservation, volunteer in a medical center or dive into community service for teens with our construction and community development program.

Volunteer in Africa

Volunteer Uganda – Volunteer work for teens comes in all shapes and forms, and our unique solar health initiative reflects this in Uganda. Raise awareness about solar health and encourage village-dwellers to replace dangerous and expensive kerosene with safe and economic solar lanterns. You can also apply to community development projects focusing on clean water and family planning, or volunteer in an orphanage or as a midwife.

Volunteer Tanzania – Sports coaching and dance classes are among our volunteer projects in Tanzania, a world famous safari destination home to Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater. With widespread HIV and malnutrition, our medical programs are an important resource for poverty-stricken locals and a great opportunity to utilize your skills where they’re most needed.

What should I know before volunteering overseas?

Helping others, improving your skills and becoming a better person: when you’re in your teens volunteer abroad programs are a win-win! But before applying to any volunteer program, it’s important to ensure this is the right path for you. Here are a few things to consider:

Choose a program you’ll enjoy

While it’s healthy to push yourself out of your comfort zone, be careful not to push yourself too far. The key is knowing your limits. Read up on where you’ll be staying, accommodation standards and accessibility – how far are the nearest shops and amenities, for example? Read, read and read some more, then decide whether you’ll be happy living there for 1 – 12 weeks.

Learn some of the languages

An inability to communicate the most basic of things can be an isolating and stressful experience. Make an effort to learn some of the languages before you go, or sign up to our language immersion programs. It may also be worth packing a pocket dictionary or downloading a translation app.

Emotionally prepare yourself

Overseas volunteer opportunities for teens can prove challenging in far-flung countries where the customs, language, and way of life are hugely different to back home. Furthermore, some things will be tough to witness, like orphaned children and injured animals. Mental preparation is the key to successful cultural immersion, so read travel guides, orientation guides and connect with past volunteers to get an idea of what to expect.

Check your finances

Do you have enough to cover the cost of the program and extra cash for things like additional food, activities, and emergencies? You might also need to factor in the cost of buying equipment like walking shoes, comfortable clothes and a camera, and budget for things like vaccinations and passport renewals.

Research the organization

While it’s generally a good idea to do your own research, rest assured that A Broader View is a trusted non-profit organization that works tirelessly year-round to support our wonderful volunteers and serve the communities where our projects are based. We receive 100% of our funding from volunteer contributions and have donated over $3.5 million in international aid in the last decade. By joining us you are not only making a difference during your trip but also ensuring a lasting impact.
